MBEKI IN THE USA

ELOQUENT MBEKI VOWS NOT
TO SPEND ALL ON AZT

Here's what I've gathered on today's event in SF -
from 3 sources who were present.

Most of President Mbeki's talk today at the Commonwealth Club was regarding foreign investment to spur economic growth in South Africa. When questioned specifically about HIV/AIDS, he reiterated the differences between South African AIDS from Western AIDS and re-asserted his support of dissension and open debate around the dogma of the HIV=AIDS paradigm.

He reiterated that AZT will not be used to devour his nations tiny medical budget. And he did so in a remarkably gentlemanly, eloquent and diplomatic way. There were 500 people present at the Commonwealth Club, representing an inclusive spectrum of the political scene in San Francisco.

Everyone from Martin Delaney to ACTUP-SF to HEAL-SF members were present. This was not an event "dissidents" felt they *needed* to protest or raise hell at. San Francisco dissidents are, as far as I am aware, without exception supportive of, and I dare say, proud of President Mbeki's continuing stand.

As an aside, one long-term, no-med survivor/dissident of 14 years, who has never told his mother he was "HIV positive", spoke at length with the same FOX network interviewer that Delaney blathered on endlessly at.

Maybe FOX will someday eventually break the story of the century?
